Every Body Dances in Schools
Every Body Dances is an amazing initiative that aims to make dance education more inclusive and accessible in public schools. By aligning with the BC Dance Curriculum and providing support for classroom teachers, the program focuses on:
Inclusivity and Accessibility: Ensuring that students of all abilities and backgrounds can participate in dance, which includes adaptations for physical, cognitive, and emotional needs.
Embodied Learning: Emphasizing learning through physical movement and personal experience, which can help students understand concepts in a more hands-on, experiential way.
Dance Literacy: Developing students' understanding of dance as an art form using the Five Elements of Dance.
Support for Teachers: Providing resources, training, or other forms of support to help teachers integrate dance into their classrooms effectively or meet their curricular goals.
Every Body Dances’ approach not only enriches students’ educational experiences but also supports teachers in delivering high-quality dance education.
Testimonials
"Every Body Dances" was one of the best physical activity workshops for my 7th grade students. My students were initially nervous and resistant to the idea of dancing, but Alison was immediately able to change their minds through her fun, upbeat attitude and sense of humour. She incorporated music, movement, videos, dance, and games to keep my class intrigued for several dance sessions. Alison is flexible to the needs of each class and can think on her feet to adjust as needed. Every single student participated in the workshop, many laughs were had, and they still talk about their time with Alison. I highly recommend this workshop for intermediate teachers. - Alexa Klonarakis, Gr 7 Teacher
Alison's “Every Body Dances” offers an opportunity for all levels of learners, regardless of their needs and exposure to dance, to enjoy, explore and celebrate body movements in a collaborative and safe environment full of joy and laughter. My grade 4/5 students loved the experienced and felt inspired to participate fully! - Denise Brbot, Gr 4/5 Teacher
Every Body Dances for Seniors
“Every Body Dances for Seniors is a thoughtful and inclusive approach to dance, inspired by the principles of Movement Speaks. This program caters to the physical and cognitive needs of seniors, providing a range of benefits from physical fitness to emotional well-being.
We start with gentle movements that can be done both seated and standing. This includes stretching, joint mobilizations, and light cardio to gradually increase heart rate and prepare the body for more intense activity. Throughout the session we include exercises with rhythmic arm movements, gentle leg lifts, and basic dance steps that can be adapted to individual capabilities. We focus on exercises that promote coordination, muscle strength, and bone density and are rooted in exploration and imagery. We foster a sense of community by incorporating group activities where participants can interact through movement. This can include group improvisation exercises or simple partner dances. (There is always the option for participants to move on their own). We end with a cool-down that includes gentle stretches to relax muscles and improve flexibility.
